May 2024
It's interesting to write this exactly a year later. Looking through my pictures from last May makes me excited for the month ahead, when the flowers bloom, everything turns green, and all the people come out of hiding. May is a magical month here in northern Sweden.
As soon as it warmed up just a bit and the sun was out, the boys were barefoot and in shorts, and we walked over to the park just across the river from us.
We played, ate ice cream, and got really excited for the warm months to come.
Adaline and I played at another park near our house and we were very proud of the perfect mote that we dug.
The last thing we expected when moving here was to continue experiencing earthquakes like in California. Andrew and I felt it right away, but thought it was the construction on campus (which shakes our house regularly). We quickly realized that not only did it feel a little different, but it was also Saturday, and there was no construction. Looked it up, and sure enough, there was a decent-sized earthquake not far from us. So weird.
Sitting around in the sun enjoying our lördagsgodis.
Our first (2nd?) Nordic wildlife sighting! Within a week, we saw two hedgehogs in our yard, and they were the cutest little guys ever. I think they're considered good luck to have around.
I took this picture at 6:50am, and the sun was already over the large gym next to our house. It's hard to believe that it was completely dark with stars still out just a couple of months before. The change happens so fast and is so drastic. It's truly wild.
The city had a culture day that we went to and explored. The kids made wool felt puppets, painted pictures, built with Legos/played at Exploritoriet, and tried out some new instruments. It was a fun day, and I love that the community puts on things like this for free.
Everything outside felt like it was waking up and full of energy.
I took these pictures on a run. I feel so lucky to be able to walk out my front door and enjoy beautiful places like this.
Alex took my phone so now I have about 50 versions of this picture...
Glad mors dag!
What a ham
More pictures of nature and playing outside.
A highlight of the month (year?!) was going to Madrid with Adaline to see Taylor Swift! We were there for a pretty short time, but we had so much fun exploring and enjoying the concert together. It was a dream to get to take this trip with her. I hope she remembers it for a long time.
The Spanish I learned in high school slowly started to come back after we had been there about 12 hours, but getting this meal was stressful. Ha. By dinner time things were going much better and I remembered enough to ask if a restaurant was open, order us food, find the bathroom, ask where to pay, and ask which entrance to use at the stadium. Initially when I would reach for Spanish, my feeble attempts at learning Swedish or ASL were the only things I could find. I'm curious how it would go now because I feel like as I've learned more Swedish, Spanish has disappeared more and more. But I digress, we found food and had an awesome time.
Napping and then getting ready for the concert.
We felt SO warmly welcomed by the city. Everyone we interacted with was so kind and seemed so happy to have the extra business from people in town for the concert. They were even more thrilled when we simply attempted to speak in Spanish. It was so fun.
Ahh! In the Real Madrid Stadium with my daughter to see Taylor Swift and Paramore!! We sang and danced our hearts out, and it was SOO fun. Adaline seemed a little shy/overwhelmed by the noise and the crowds, so I didn't get the screaming, jumping up and down reaction I was hoping for, but she loved it.
We had a layover in southern Spain, and call me naive, but I had no idea that Spain had all these mountains. I really hope to go back one day and spend more time there.
Spring has fully sprung!
We had the Antonios over for dinner (I think that's what this picture is from). We had a karaoke party, played reverse charades, and enjoyed princesstårta. It was lovely.
