Today is gonna be a good day

 August 2021

If the pictures are the proof, then I guess not much happened in August. I remember that we spent time getting ready for school to start and trying to squeeze in some fun before summer officially ended. We rode bikes in the church parking lot-which quickly turned into catching lizards and bringing them home for the garden. We also met friends at the BMX park which was a brand new adventure for my kids and took a little getting used to. By the time we were ready to go, the oldest three were all champs on at least one of the courses. I maybe even borrowed Matthew's bike to take a turn of my own.

You can tell how fast I'm going by the way my hair is flying behind me. Also, it isn't quite as easy as the kids make it look.

Had an accident at the park and then found himself pants-less at Target

Went to "the park with the hills" with dad.

Had a service project combined with a playdate/baby-sitting that involved driving 6 best friends in one car-they loved that

Had some fresh, yummy caprese salad thanks to a productive garden.

Adaline and Matthew started school! In person! Adaline is in 3rd and Matthew is in first, and since their school is Montessori based, they actually get to be in the same classroom. Adaline has been so brave starting at a brand new school and going to public school for the first time in 2.5 years. She is making lots of friends and talks her teacher's ear off. Matthew still has his days where I carry him into school and sit with him until I'm confident he won't run out and try to climb the fence (again). BUT he also has a lot of days where he jumps out of the car and runs into school with Adaline. They are both taking some big steps and it makes me proud and a little heartbroken to see them growing up.

I have a lot of reading to do. Apparently it stresses Andrew out to see my night stand like this. I have finished 7 of these now though, so it's getting smaller!

Michael and I are enjoying home school together. In California, they offer transitional kindergarten (TK) for kids who turn 5 between September 2 and December 2, so Michael could actually be at the same school as Adaline and Matthew. However, with last year being as weird as it was, and Adaline starting her first year back at public school, I decided to home school Michael partly so that he and Alex could have the one-on-one bonding time that they missed out on. I also did it because I don't like afternoon half days and driving to the school three times every day-we'll have to do that next year anyway. So here we are! and it's been fun with him. He is eager to learn and do our activities, and I am a lot more practiced and chill after homeschooling Matthew for TK and Adaline for K-2nd. We found a ton of tomato horn worms in the garden this year (over 60 so far) , so we went ahead and used them for one of our projects. We talked about what we knew about them so far, asked questions, did research, and drew a picture. Then all four of the kids kept the first few we found as pets for a few days. They did a good job taking care of them until they accidentally left them out one night and they all disappeared. Well, and then there was the one that someone dropped into the AC unit-that induced a LOT of tears.

One of my favorite memories from August was getting to watch and celebrate our friends being sealed together as a family with their daughter. There was so much love and happiness in that room. I didn't catch any pictures, but our friend (and photographer) captured this adorable one of Alex that I just had to share.
