An update on the kiddos

Dang it! I had this all written on April 6 with all the pictures put in and just never post d it. So now it's a bit inaccurate. Oh well :)

I had some random pictures and some random thoughts and figured I'd just put the two together.

This was during Sunday School a few weeks ago. Adaline had been sick Thursday and Friday, so even though we didn't think she was contagious, we figured she shouldn't go to nursery. Sunday School was a little crazy, but we each took one for 3rd hour and it really wasn't too bad.

These kids just love books

Matthew climbed into his high chair, probably to convince me to feed him, and Adaline pulled up this chair so she could read to him.

This is where Adaline likes to do her "tricks"

These kids are growing like weeds and learning just as quickly.

Two weeks ago Matthew got Adaline's cold which turned into him not being able to breathe. We had a very restless night with lots of kicks to the face and the next day we went to the doctor for a breathing treatment, and prescriptions for an inhaler and other medicines. It took a while, and he rally hated the inhaler, but he is doing great now.

Matthew got a new teething, including the other 2 of his top four front teeth. I think he now has 6 on the top and 4 on the bottom. He weighs around 27 pounds which is just a couple pounds behind Adaline. I think he'll pass her before too long. He's just a very chunky kid despite how active he is.

On the way home from church a few weeks ago, we had some lemons from the Moons that Adaline was asking to hold. Andrew picked up a huge one and gave it her saying, "holy smokes! That's a big one!" She got it and said, "Yeah, Holy Ghost! It is!" I about died laughing and then I tried to act like it was no big deal and not funny at all so that she wouldn't keep saying it. It didn't work, she said it a couple more times and I laughed about it for the whole day. Man oh man, luckily I haven't heard it since.

Matthew and Adaline are generally good at playing together. They do get in each other's way a lot, but they also love to wrestle, play cars together, splash in the tub, play with their baby dolls, and play in their forts. They both love going to the library every week, and for Adaline I think the only activity that tops the library is getting to go to nursery. Adaline loves riding her balance bike and has gotten pretty good at it too. Matthew randomly climbed into his stroller the other day and Adaline was asking to ride her bike, so we went out of the complex and I took her for a big bike ride that was probably close to a mile. She did great and would have kept going if we'd had time.

We all love it when Daddy comes home. The kids run and yell all the way to the front door and both shout "Dad! Dad!" as soon as they see him. I think it's Andrew's favorite part of every day.

When we got back from our Christmas vacation, Matthew suddenly started talking. He doesn't put words together (vocally) very often, but he can say dad, mom, zebra (ba), milk, please, cheese, more, book, "yeahyeahyeahyeah" for yes, no, bath, poop, hi, bye, hey, diaper, bum, yay, phone, nose, eye, ear, cheeks, head, dog and probably a few others I'm forgetting. Obviously, each of these doesn't sound exactly like an adult saying it, but he consistently uses the same sound for each word and it's close. He has also started attempting random words he hears us say which is adorable. [After I wrote this, I started paying more attention to what Matthew was saying and I realized that he can basically say anything-if he wants to. He made his point by randomly saying, and pointing to a, pillow even though no one had said that word recently.] He still signs a lot of things like orange, banana, water, milk, more, please, cracker, apple, all done, pancake, thank you, etc, but he's pretty mixed between signing and talking now. Even though his vocal communication is pretty good now, I am so glad we had signing to get us through before. Matthew had started just screaming all the time and I could rarely tell what we wanted. Luckily he picked up signing fairly quickly and it was a HUGE blessing for us.

Adaline still loves signing, though she doesn't actually use it, it's just a game for her. She likes to ask me how to sign or spell random things. She has learned a few letters now. She can recognize capital A, B, C, E, L, M, O, P, S, and T (usually) and can name at least one thing that starts with each of those letters. She is always finding letters on street signs, license plates, wherever. Her favorite letter by far is "A for Adaline and A for Andrew" and she points it out EVERYWHERE, especially on our shirts, but really anywhere she sees it. Her counting has improved to where she can count how many of something there are instead of just reciting numbers. She still throws in a few extra numbers pretty often, but she's getting there.

Matthew is still so snuggly. I don't think he's ever going to grow out of it and that's great with me. He loves to rest his head on my shoulder, suck his thumb, and rub my hair on his face. It's good because he can also be so crazy. He tends to be very rough and destructive so i'm grateful he also has a soft side. He recently ripped up a library book so we had to pay for it, ouch. We are working on not running out into the street and not throwing food off of his tray. We are having a lot more success with the not running into the street part, although we still have a lot of progress to make on that one too. Matthew has presented a lot of challenges that I never went through with Adaline. For example, she always knew not to go into the street and I could trust her not to. Sure, she'd get right up to the edge, but she knew not to go out there and she listened. I'm grateful that all children are different, but I sometimes wish I could just pick my favorite parts and have them all be the same.

Speaking of Adaline being easier...Almost a year later and I still hate potty training. Adaline did great when we first started. She had been taking her diaper off and using the toilet by herself, so I figured it was time. After getting it down and having very few accidents (except when playing with friends-she always peed those times) for a while, she will suddenly forget that she's potty trained and have 4 accidents in a day...and NOT CARE! She is still doing this and it is so frustrating. She's going through another one of these phases right now, so when I can tell she needs to go I try to prompt her and kindly encourage her to go. Well her new favorite thing is to tell me no, she doesn't need to go, all the way up until she pees in her underwear. I don't get it. We won't even be in the middle of anything fun or interesting, she just doesn't want to go and isn't bothered by having an accident. Ugh. On facebook you get to hear all about how everyone else's child was potty trained in 3 days and wakes up dry every single morning (Adaline hasn't woken up dry a day in her life) and that they potty trained themselves. I really am happy for these people and I'm glad it isn't a big struggle for them, but it makes me feel like I'm crazy and I must be doing everything wrong. Recently, one of my friends wrote about her potty training woes with her daughter of similar age and while I wish they weren't having any issues, and everything was peachy, it is nice to know that many of us are struggling together and just trying to figure out this insane part of parenthood.

  1. Don't even get me started on potty training. Avery still won't poop in the toilet. O.M.G!!!!!! I'm tearing my hair out!!! (she has consistently peed in the potty for like 9 months now... what the heck?!)
